Kirstin Rabe

born in Hamburg, Germany

Kirstin Rabe is deeply fascinated by materials of various consistencies, especially paper.
Kirstin explores the transformative nature of paper, using it as a medium to express its unique materiality. Her creative process is often meditative, characterized by repetition and change, as she invites light, color, and texture into her work, engaging the viewer in the perceptual process.

In her work, Kirstin reinterprets the art of papermaking through a sustainable and meditative process. She crafts sheets from old newspapers, cotton pulp, pigments, and binders, which she then transforms into layered or knotted reliefs. In different series, the broken, wave-like lines of countless paper layers suggest constant movement. Yet, these reliefs collectively exude clarity and calm, visualizing the fundamental phenomena of light, color, and texture.
